Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting Subsoil Drainage Systems

Durban’s humid-subtropical climate (hot, humid summers and mild winters) and annual rainfall around ~1,000 mm create conditions where well-maintained sub-soil drainage systems is essential. Add coastal sandy pockets, clay patches inland, periodic heavy thunderstorms and salt-laden air, and you have a system design and maintenance challenge that must be actively managed to avoid basement flooding, foundation movement and soggy gardens.  

Below are practical, technically grounded tips for keeping subsoil (French-drain / underdrain) systems working well in Durban — and why each action matters.

1. Inspect before the wet season — and do it regularly

Why: Durban’s heaviest rains occur November–March; clear drains before this window to reduce flood risk. Visual checks identify blocked inlets, sediment build-up, collapsed pipes or sagging trenches before storms force failures. How: Inspect in autumn (March–April) and again in early spring (October) — more often if you have surface runoff problems or live on a slope.

Check inlet gratings, inspection chambers, outlet points and any visible pipework. If you’re near the coast, add a midwinter check for corrosion or marine debris. 

2. Keep inlets, gullies and outlets clean

Why: Surface sediment, leaves, and litter are the most common cause of underdrain clogging; if the inlet clogs, water backs up into foundations and gardens. How: Remove debris from gully gratings and catchbasins monthly during the rainy months; empty silt baskets and grease traps on the same schedule. 6. Guard against root and animal ingress

How: Maintain a root-free buffer (no large trees within 5–8 m of drain lines); install root barriers where trees must stay; use HDPE or schedule-40 PVC with solvent-welded joints or welded HDPE for greater resistance to root intrusion. 

7. Choose materials for coastal, humid conditions

Why: Salt air accelerates corrosion of metallic components (gratings, fixings) and heavier biofouling occurs in warm climates. How: Prefer HDPE, PVC or PE-RT perforated pipe and stainless or plastic gratings. Use marine-grade fixings for exposed hardware and protect outlets with sacrificial anodes or corrosion-resistant fittings where stainless steel is used. 

8. Manage stormwater at source

Why: Reducing the volume and velocity of water reaching your subsoil drains reduces sediment loading and overload risk. How: Install roof-gutters with debris screens, direct downspouts into separate soakaways, and use permeable paving or garden swales to intercept runoff. Consider rainwater harvesting for reuse and reduced peak flows. 

9. Document and schedule maintenance

Why: A written program prevents missed tasks and helps identify trends (e.g., increasing siltation after nearby construction). How: Keep a simple log: inspection date, findings, cleaning performed, CCTV reports and any repairs. Use this record when engaging contractors or making warranty claims.
